In Banking industry in India, all trade unions are politically affiliated i.e. all major political parties have their trade unions. These political parties promote and support the Trade unions, which profess their ideologies.
It was observed & experienced by many of our union activists that they were not given their due positions & respect since they openly professed and practiced the principle of "SHIV SENA", a political party which was first started in Maharashtra State & then spread to other parts of India. This discrimination motivated them to start a Trade union which worked on the principles of SHIV SENA Trade union
With the concurrence & blessings of SHIV SENA Chief Hon. Shri. BALASAHEB THACKERAY some enthusiastic activist first registered in 1990 a 'SENA TRADE UNION' in Bank of Maharashtra known as 'Bank of Maharashtra Karmachari Sena'. Having received a good response from employees of Bank of Maharashtra provoked Shiv Sainiks from other banks to start 'SENA TRADE UNION' in their respective bank. This then spread in Canara Bank and Indian Overseas Bank.
In 1995, two important events took place that caused a major churning and shift in employee loyalties in nationalized banks. The first one being that in Union Bank of India a 'Sena Union' was formed in the name of 'Union Bank Karmachari Sena' and received a tremendous support and achieved a majority start in Mumbai by enrolling over 2500 members. Another important event was that, it was decided to form an apex body or federation of all 'Sena Trade Unions' in banking industry and hence BANK KARMACHARI SENA MAHASANGH, was formed and registered.
Thereafter, 'Sena Trade Unions' were formed and registered in many banks i.e. Bank of India, State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and got affiliated to BANK KARMACHARI SENA MAHASANGH
The successful functioning of Sena Trade unions in banking industry on one hand and increasing the strength of Bank Karmachari Sena Mahasangh on the other side the thought process began rolling that why aren’t we invited for Bipartite talks inspite of the fact that BKSM has more membership then that of two trade unions presently negotiating with Indian Banks Association (IBA). Bank Karmachari Sena Mahasangh to overcome this injustice, under the leadership of Shri. Suryakant Mahadik, President of Bhartiya Kamgar Sena and Shri. Mohan Rawle, Member of Parliament had to agitate and after protest, IBA recognized Bank Karmachari Sena Mahasangh(BKSM) in the year 2000 as the 6th Trade Union to negotiate on Charter of Demands .
Our Bank Karmachari Sena Mahasangh was formed under the able leadership of Respected Shri. Sudhir Joshi, Shiv Sena leader & Ex. Revenue Minister, Govt. of Maharashtra. Since the inception till date Shri. Sudhir Joshi continues to lead this organization as its President.
Shri. Ravi Kuveskar & Shri. Umakant Kotnis were the Working President & General Secretary respectively of the first office bearers team of BKSM. In Banking Industry the following Trade Unions exist & owe their allegiance to the National Political Party mentioned against its name stated below
